The first major non-fiction novel, In Cold Blood, may be dealing with gory quadruple murder, but, in terms of sheer horror, it has nothing on Richard Preston’s The Hot Zone, his 1994 account of the first emergence on US soil of one of the deadliest viruses known to men: Ebola. In addition, he has also received an award from the American Institute of Physics. Preston is the only nondoctor to have received the Centers for Disease Control’s Champion of Prevention Award. He was also chosen to edit and complete the unfinished manuscript of Micro, Richard Crichton’s final novel. He has written seven exceptional nonfiction books- First Light, American Steel, The Hot Zone, The Demon in the Freezer, The Wild Trees, Panic in Level 4, and Crisis in the Red Zone-and a well-received novel, The Cobra Event. Richard Preston is an American journalist and bestselling scientific author, a contributor to The New Yorker ever since 1985.

Kiss and Cry by Keira Andrews is a steamy gay sports romance featuring grumpy/sunshine opposites attracting, secretly soft-hearted boys, hurt/comfort, and, of course, a happy ending. I might want Henry more than a gold medal. He’s caring and gorgeous and hot, and I’ve never wanted anyone like this. He tries to keep me at arm’s length, but it’s no use. He might as well be carved from ice.īut when I need help, he’s there. No way - Henry’s epically boring and cold. My mom’s convinced training with Henry Sakaguchi will distract me as we head into the Olympics. I’m peeking under his happy-go-lucky exterior and discovering there’s more to Theo than I imagined. I’m going to win gold if it’s the last thing I do. Now he’s invaded my training center, and I have to see him every day as we prepare for the Olympics. Everyone loves him - judges, fans, coaches. Will figure-skating enemies become lovers?Įverything comes easily for Theo Sullivan, whether it’s jumps or figure-skating world titles. “I do not hesitate to recommend it to men, who need to understand the wives they live with, and to any woman who wants to walk with God.” In addition to Stepping Heavenward. “This book is a treasure of both godly and womanly wisdom told with disarming candor and humility, yet revealing a deep heart’s desire to know God,” says noted Christian speaker Elisabeth Elliot. She learns, on the path to womanhood, that true happiness is found in giving one’s life first to Christ and then in serving others in His name. This journal-like account of a 19th-century girl’s life, aspirations, failures, and hopes has become a classic. The famous diary of a girl’s spiritual maturation, taking us through teen years to becoming a wise adult woman. A beautiful edition of Elizabeth Prentiss’ classic work, a book many women have said greatly impacted their lives. However, this is a haunting story set in an evocative world, and will no doubt satisfy readers. Like it’s predecessor, Forestfall does at times take gothic tropes and angsty teenage romance to an extreme. The novel provides a satisfactory ending, with plenty of mystery, conflict and romance experienced along the way. Forestfall is her second novel and her confidence as a writer is growing. Leta is determined to find a way home and Rowan will stop at nothing to get her back.Ĭlipstone is a former librarian turned author from the Barossa Ranges in South Australia. That is until, one night, Leta and Rowan discover that they still have a connection to each other that spans worlds. She is now living uneasily alongside the Lord Under while those she left behind try to come to terms with her disappearance. At the end Clipstone’s first book, Lakesedge, Leta has sacrificed herself to the Lord Under, a mysterious being who lives in a realm of mist and darkness, to save both Rowan and her beloved brother, Arien. The story once again revolves around Leta and Rowan and the forces that both draw them together and force them apart. (Age: Young Adult) Recommended.įorestfall is the second novel in Lyndall Clipstone’s World at the Lake’s Edge duology. Forestfall by Lyndall Clipstone Macmillan, 2022. The volume closes with a couple of so-so bonus stories. I also like a new male character that's been introduced, particularly because of the later interactions between him and Usui. There are some troublesome gender depictions - odd for a story that involves characters that are frustrated by the restrictions placed upon their respective genders! Also, while they is some good teamwork involved, and Misaki does get to do some "saving" now and then, all too often Usui shows Misaki up - even when he's not at the top of his game! As usual, he has some problematic moments, particularly when he acts jealously (as if he has a right to!), but I did come away from the volume liking him a little better. Even when I can tell, the character's motivations and logic tend to have me scratching my head. Storytellling-wise, it's often hard to tell what's going on - both in the sense of who's talking and, more, sussing out just what the situation is. The strongest aspect of the book is the art design - I enjoy it, even if sometimes I can't tell who's who. Grade: 5I'll go through the book plot by plot, with mild spoilers, so first, let me give non-spoilery overall impressions. Readers should proceed at their own risk. (Yes, I've heard they're epic and awesome and all that, and someday I probably will read the first book, at least, but it takes a lot to make me want to get invested a series that now comprises over twelve books. Which didn't really mean much to me I've never read any of the WoT books. Then I happened to see the author's name again online: apparently he'd been tapped to finish Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. So I left it on the shelf yes, I do judge books by their covers, and while this one was kind of intriguing, anything that makes me think the author is probably novelizing the AD&D games he played as a kid gets a "pass" from me. The show-the artist’s first in New York since 2014-takes drawing as a jumping off point. Several of these objects also served as inspirations for his latest exhibition, “We’ll Keep On Dancing Till We Pay the Rent,” which opens at Gagosian’s Chelsea gallery on November 8. The artists behind these works are rarely household names instead, they are representative of the unique way an artist like Brown assesses historic art. Brown’s Shoreditch workspace houses treasures like a 15th century woodcut, a 20th century watercolor, and a selection of 17th and 18th century ornate frames. It makes sense, then, that Brown’s studio is also a tribute to the art and aesthetics of the past. In the future, Brown plans to display his work alongside older paintings, drawings, and sculptures from his private collection. Works on view range from early appropriations of Frank Auerbach and Jean-Honoré Fragonard to layered portraits that put a twist on Renaissance Old Masters. The British painter recently opened the Brown Collection, which debuted with an exhibition of his own art, in a restored house in London’s Marylebone neighborhood.
